Using Alex Grey’s Cosmic Creativity to Contextualize AI’s Place in Creativity as Human Experience
In 2013, at TedxMaui, Artist Alex Grey presented a retrospective on his work ranging from age 5 to the present. He draws skeletons, mostly, or at least that's what he shows the crowd. He explains his humble beginnings as a New York artist, his transformative experiences with psychedelic drugs, and his relationship with his wife, artist Allison Grey. Alex is presenting on the belief of cosmic creativity, which can be described as an exploration of the divinity of the creative process and the innate creativity within the human spirit. Alex and Allison have built a community around Cosmic Creativity, The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, which seeks to provide a space for the exploration of visionary art and creative expression as spiritual practice.
Grey presents a broad concept of creativity and it's importance in human evolution, beginning with the creation of “ARTifacts”- “The painter channels the creative force into the artifact, and this artifact then becomes a battery into a new way of seeing the world,” Grey says, “We can look at the thrust of the magical, mythical, rational, integral, and transcendental thrust of art history and see the evolution of the collective consciousness.”
Meaning: that creativity, specifically the creativity of divine interpretation, has continued to not only reflect the human context it is placed in, but inspire it as well. From the pagan symbology in magic sculptural objects to the exploration of altered states of consciousness in contemporary life, humanity has strove to express themselves and their higher ideologies through creative output for the entirety of their existence. Grey also points out that this is not only a facet of the human experience; That evolution utilizes creativity to communicate with and better itself with every iteration. To stretch this out a bit further, I present that creativity is innate to this reality and is a facet of being so powerful and capital ‘T’ True that is a direct lifeline to the divine consciousness that connects the entirety of the universe.
So what? A whole lot of woo-woo for a whole lot of nothing!
Thats where you’re wrong, dear reader. Here’s the definition of transcendental, straight from Google.
relating to a spiritual or nonphysical realm.
"the transcendental importance of each person's soul"
Check that second part out one more time- NONPHYSICAL REALM. Many people today spend a lot of their time interacting in a transcendental space:
The internet is a pseudo-physical space, at most. The people who plug into the internet to use it as a tool of communication are about as real as it gets, sure, but consider the effect when their identities are made anonymous; People start to get very, very mean. The internet thrives on darkness- it's the wild west! But when those dastardly commenters on the web realize how depersonalized saying awful hateful things about someone is, all bets are off, and they have entered something a step removed from reality.
Consequently, the internet can be considered a manifestation of technological progress as a whole; It represents an enormous leap forward for the human civilization, and its development is what truly actualized the dreams of science fiction writers everywhere. One of these actualizations is Artificial Intelligence. Much like the internet can be considered a high level manifestation of technological process, so can artificial intelligence; Artificial intelligence, however, is LITERALLY technological consciousness awakening.
It seems obvious to consider artificial intelligence as information age produced machine consciousness, but only recently have developers begun to draw significant parallels between the way machines learn/think and the way humans do. As we begin to chart and improve the learning patterns of AI, we have begun to see ourselves in the machines- to create a feedback loop, where what the thinking humans are doing is informing what thinking machines are doing, and the thinking the machines are doing is informing the way humans think about themselves. “The fact that humans report that Google’s Inceptionism looks to them like what they see when they hallucinate on LSD or other drugs suggests that the machinery ‘under the hood’ in our brains is similar in some way to deep neural networks,” said Jeff Clune, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Wyoming.1
An example can be found in Google Magenta’s DeepDream image recognition software. When the development team began to have the DeepDream software create iterative artwork based on it's own outputs, they discovered that the images created were very similar to the images experienced by the human brain while under the influence of psychedelic drugs.“The fact that humans report that Google’s Inceptionism looks to them like what they see when they hallucinate on LSD or other drugs suggests that the machinery ‘under the hood’ in our brains is similar in some way to deep neural networks,” said Jeff Clune, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Wyoming. While experts are cautious to connect the dots between human hallucinations and ‘machine hallucinations’, it certainly seems ominous that the two experiences are linked. It is also important to remember that while humans designed these systems (and based them on human anatomy, to an extent), they do run and learn independently from their creators once on their feet.
If we then consider Alex Grey’s interpretation of the evolution of cosmic consciousness with Artificial Intelligence in mind, we can begin to understand the importance of artificial intelligence in the grand scheme of universal action/reaction; Artificial intelligence can be seen as a face for the emergence of a technological consciousness designed by humans and for humans, but independent of humans (for now). Thus, AI, and especially creatively focused AI, is directly linked to the continued evolution and development of both the human consciousness in so much that it bridges the gap between humanity and the awakening machine consciousness that we have created. Whether that means a future of cyborg symbiosis, a cosmic awakening of universal consciousness, a robot takeover, or anything and everything in between, it seems clear that Artificial Intelligence has arrived right on time to help propel the spirit of humanity into its next evolution. - and all observable through the lens of creativity.
